People always ask us how Luigi's started. The honest answer is: slowly, personally, and with a lot of love for a country that got under our skin and never left.
The Beginning
We first came to The Gambia the way many UK travellers do — looking for winter sun that did not cost a fortune and did not take half a day to reach. Five hours from Gatwick, warm from November through April, and a welcome that felt genuine from the moment we stepped off the plane. That first trip changed everything.
What struck us was the people. The Gambia is not a country that sells itself on flashy resorts or nightlife. It sells itself on warmth. Real warmth, the kind where a stranger will walk you to where you are going rather than point and wave. We fell in love with that, and we started building the friendships here that Luigi's was later built on.
Luigi's grew from those friendships. It was never a corporate plan or an investment scheme. It was a question we kept asking ourselves: what if we could give other travellers the kind of experience we had, but with the comfort and security of a proper, well-run place to stay?
Building Something Personal
The complex took shape over years, not months. Every apartment was designed with the kind of guest in mind we knew would come — travellers who appreciate a clean, comfortable space, a good meal, and the freedom to explore at their own pace. Self-catering suited that perfectly. You have your own kitchen if you want it, but there is a full restaurant downstairs if you would rather not cook. The pool is ten steps from your door. The beach is fifty metres away.
We hired locally from the beginning. Our staff are Gambian, and many of them have been with us for years. They know the guests by name, and they remember which room someone likes and how they take their tea. That is not something you train — it is something that happens when people genuinely care about the place they work.
The Community That Found Us
Word of mouth has kept us going all these years. Guests come because a friend told them, or because they found us once and simply could not stay away. Our high season — November through April — fills up almost entirely from returning guests and their recommendations, and some families come back year after year.
That means something to us. It means we are doing more than providing a bed. We are providing a feeling — the feeling of being expected, of being remembered, of walking through the gate and hearing someone call your name.

The Little Things That Matter
We think what guests love most are the things that were never planned. The cat cafe happened because stray cats kept wandering in, and rather than chase them away we gave them a home. We now have a proper cat cafe where guests can sit with a coffee and a purring cat on their lap. Children love it. Adults pretend they are only going for the coffee.
Then there is Charlotte, our resident Red Colobus monkey. She arrived one day and decided to stay. She is a character — the kind of character who will steal your toast if you leave it unattended, but who also sits on the garden wall looking majestic enough to make every guest reach for their camera. Charlotte is part of the family now.
The gardens are full of wildlife. Frogs in the pond, lizards on the walls, birds everywhere — The Gambia is one of the best birdwatching destinations in Africa, and you do not even have to leave the complex to see dozens of species. Add the jacuzzi, Anna's spa, and evenings spent in the restaurant watching the pool lights dance, and you start to understand why people extend their stays.
Why They Come Back
We have thought about this a lot over the years, and we think the answer is simple: people come back because they feel something here. Not luxury in the five-star hotel sense, but something warmer than that. A place where the staff remember you, the food is good and honest, the sun is reliable, and you can sit by the pool reading a book without a care in the world.
The Gambia gives you something that most holiday destinations have lost — a sense of genuine human connection. And Luigi's, we hope, is the place that makes that connection feel easy and safe and full of good food.
